Collaborative Art Project Winter 2015Laura Golden

New format!

Artists will submit sketches and then choose the image(s) they want to work from.  Each artist will submit a "sketch" for a painting or digital work.  The sketch can be anything: photograph, digital manipulation or a sketch on paper, digital or paper format.

Sketches will be posted and then artists who have submitted sketches will choose which to work on.  Compelling sketches may be chosen by lots of artists or not and that will be part of the interesting aspect of this twist on last year's project (see below).

Once all participants have made their choices the sketches will then be printed on good quality paper and clear gesso will be applied.  The gesso allows you to use in any media, including oil paint.  Then they will be mailed to each artist participating.  If you are working digitally you will get copies via email.  The paper, gesso and mailing costs will need to be paid by each artist or you can apply for a scholorship!   Once finished scan and email the result, it will be posted on the web *here* (and possibly print later.)

Dates:

Sketches Due:1/31/15 to ctexiera@gmail.com or  119 Lockes Village Rd, Wendell, MA 01379.  Here are the sketches from last year View the sketches

Painting Images Due: 3/20/15  I very much prefer electronic scans of the paintings.  If you're local, I can do it for you.  If not your local, office store should be able to do it, but tell them high resolution or  300dpi.

FAQs

How long do I have to choose sketches? The sooner you do it  the more time you'll have to paint.  However you can choose sketches as late as 2/28.  This also means that if you paint some and find you want to paint some more - you still can!

How many paintings do I have to do?  You can do as many as you want!  With this format if one artist doesn't finish it will not impact the project.

What is the intended paper: 140lb hot press, smooth, watercolor paper printed on a Xerox 7556 with a coat or two of clear gesso.

What's the cost?  .75/sheet + 1.80 to mail it.  It's free to work digitally!

Whose painting will it be (copyright stuff)? In the end the finished work is the property of the artist who paints the piece to do with as they please.  That includes sales and reproduction.  By participating in this project you agree to have the work shown on this site and a book of this project in the future.    If you submit a sketch it is under the idea that people will paint it.  If they do what they paint is theirs, you have no rights to the derivitive products of the sketches.   In the event of a possible gallery show it is expected that artists will have their work shown if at all possible.

Will I get my sketch back? If submitted on paper the original sketch will be returned to the artist with the pieces to be painted.

I can't swing the money, can I still participate? Yes, but you will have to email me with some proof that you will come through with the finished painting.

Can I choose the sketches I paint? Yes!  unlike last year there are no groups.  This also means that I need no deposit to insure that everyone finishes.  It didn't work last time anyway and if you look you will see the holes in the finished work.

Can I paint more than one?  Yes, you just pay for the sheets.  Let's not waste them tho - I'm not charging for the printing or gessoing time.

Can I change the painting to something different than the sketch? To make this project interesting it is important that you add your own style to the paintings, however a spirit of the original sketch needs to come through to tie it in.  Work with it and try to have fun even if the sketch is different than you would normally work with. It can change pretty dramatically and still tie in.  Go see last year's to get an idea!

Sketch

View the sketches

Groups of artists will collaborate on - 8x10 paintings. Other artists will paint from your sketch and vice versa.

Each artist will submit a "sketch" for a painting and receive additional sketches from other artists to paint over the winter.

The sketch can be anything: photograph, digital manipulation or a sketch on paper, digital or paper format

The sketches will then be scanned, printed on good quality paper and clear gesso will be applied.  Then sets of sketches will be mailed to each artist.  If you are working digitally you will get copies via email.

Paint them over the winter 2013-14, in any media you chose.  Finish by March 21, 2014

When complete the artist will submit a good digital representation of the work.  (scan, high quality photo or slide)

They will be shown on the web, a book of the project, electronic and physical,  will be created and possibly displayed at a gallery yet to be determined.

Submit your sketch and a  $25 deposit electronically to ctexiera@gmail.com or by mail to 119 Lockes Village Road, ● Wendell,  MA 01379  Submissions due October 31.  The deposit minus expenses will be returned when the project is finished.  The expenses will be less than $5 fro the largest groups (80-1.40 for mailing and envelopes, paper and printing <.50/sheet and gesso will add a little bit.)   The deposit is to allow the project to grow as much as it can, without making me go broke.  I have applied for grants so it is likely that this cost will go to zero.  If the deposit will keep you from participating contact me.

Participating artists will be updated periodically.

FAQs

What is the intended paper: 140lb hot press, smooth, watercolor paper printed on a Xerox 7556 with a coat or three of clear gesso. (Subject to testing which is happening now)

What's the cost?  The cost of $25 per submission will cover paper, postage, and photocopies.  The remainder will be returned to each artist when they submit high quality digital copies of the work.

Whose painting will it be? In the end the finished work is the property of the artist who paints the piece to do with as they please.  If there is a possibility of a gallery show it is expected that artists will have their work shown if at all possible.

I can't swing the money, can I still participate? Yes, but you will have to email me with some proof that you will come through with the finished painting.

Can I choose the sketches I paint? Nope, but you can make requests about people to be in your group, themes and images you like.  I'll try to accomondate requests, but it may be necessary to round out groups to make it work.

Can I change the painting to something different than the sketch? To make this project interesting it is important that you add your own style to the paintings, however a spirit of the original sketch needs to come through to tie it in.  Work with it and try to have fun even if the sketch is different than you would normally work with.

Can I be in more than one group?  Yes, but you are comitting to paint how ever many paintings for all the groups by the first day of Spring.  Don't overextend yourself!

When will I get my sketches to paint? By December 21, 2013

Why the cost?  There are two big reasons, the first is if this goes big, which I'm hopeful it will, I won't be broke at the end.  The second is to kill the flake factor.  You'll get any money over costs BACK when you turn in electric files for the site/book project.  Remind me to give you the book from project I did where all the artists but one scanned their work as they went.  Oh wait I can't, it couldn't be completed because of that one.  The money is to help prevent that.

This project funded in part by the Wendell Cultural Council, a local agency whcih is supported by the Massachusetts Culturall Council
